Reconstitution and dosing, without the guesswork
So your order arrived and it’s… a pinch of white cake at the bottom of a tiny glass vial. No liquid, no instructions, and a syringe that measures in “units,” whatever those are. Congratulations: you’ve reached reconstitution, the step where most self-inflicted dosing errors are born. It takes two minutes to do right. Here’s the whole thing, start to finish.
Why your peptide is a powder
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, and in water those chains slowly fall apart, since heat, agitation, and time all take a cut. So manufacturers freeze-dry them (the label word is lyophilized) into a stable powder that survives a week in a delivery truck without complaint. Dry, the peptide is tough. The moment you add water, the countdown starts. That’s the entire logic of this guide: keep it dry until you need it, mix it gently, store it cold, use it within weeks.
Bac water, not sterile water
You reconstitute with bacteriostatic water, called “bac water” everywhere the subject comes up. It is not fancy, not expensive, and not optional.
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added, the preservative that stops bacteria from growing in a vial you’ll puncture again and again.

A reconstituted vial is a multi-dose vial: you’ll stick a needle through that stopper twenty times over a month. Plain sterile water has nothing in it to stop whatever rides in on puncture number seven from setting up a colony. Sterile water is fine if you’ll use the entire vial the same day; for everything else, bac water. And no, water from any tap, kettle, or “it looked clean” source is not in this conversation.
Mixing it: the two-minute version
- Wipe both rubber stoppers, the bac water’s and the peptide vial’s, with an alcohol swab. Ten seconds of hygiene for a month-long vial.
- Decide how much water you’re adding before you draw it. This number sets your entire dosing math, so write it on the vial. (2 ml into a 5 mg vial is the classic default, for nice round numbers later.)
- Draw the water and inject it slowly down the inside wall of the glass, not blasted straight onto the powder puck. The peptide does not enjoy pressure-washing.
- Swirl, don’t shake. Slow, gentle circles until the powder dissolves, or just let it sit a few minutes and do the job itself. Shaking whips in foam, and the shear forces at those bubble surfaces physically tear peptide chains apart. You can turn good powder into expensive water in ten enthusiastic seconds.
- Most peptides dissolve clear within a couple of minutes. If it stays cloudy or has visible floaters after gentle swirling and a little patience, stop. That vial has a problem, and your vendor has a support ticket coming.
The units math
Here’s the part people overthink. Three numbers, three divisions:
Concentration is peptide divided by water: 5 mg into 2 ml = 2.5 mg/ml. Volume per dose is your dose divided by concentration: a 250 mcg dose is 0.25 mg, and 0.25 ÷ 2.5 = 0.1 ml. Units are just volume read off an insulin syringe:
U-100 means 100 units per milliliter, so the “units” on an insulin syringe are a concentration standard, not a property of your peptide.
ISO 8537 · insulin syringe standardSo 0.1 ml = 10 units on a U-100 syringe. That’s the whole trick: 5 mg vial, 2 ml bac water, 250 mcg dose, draw to 10. The water amount is your one free choice. Add more water and the same dose lands on a bigger, easier-to-read number. A dose that sits at 3 units is squint territory; the same dose at 12 units is easy. Note what units are not: a dose. “I take 10 units” means nothing without the concentration behind it, which is why copying a stranger’s syringe numbers is a gamble on how much water a stranger used.
Storage
Dry powder: cool, dark, dry. The fridge is great, the freezer is fine for vials you won’t touch for months, a sock drawer away from sunlight genuinely works for weeks. Dry peptides are not delicate.
Reconstituted: the fridge, full stop, starting the moment water touches powder.

Write the mix date on the vial with a marker; “how old is this?” should never be a memory exercise. And never freeze a reconstituted vial: ice crystals do mechanically what shaking does violently.
The classic screwups
Every one of these arrives in my inbox monthly:
- Not writing down the water volume. The math depends on it, and “probably 2 ml?” is how people dose at double strength for a week.
- Shaking it like a cocktail. Covered above. Swirl.
- Plain sterile water in a month-long vial. Fine for day one, a petri dish by week three.
- Freezing the mixed vial “to make it last longer.” It lasts shorter.
- Blasting the water onto the puck with the plunger at full send. Down the glass wall, slowly.
- Measuring in “half a syringe.” Syringes come in 0.3, 0.5, and 1 ml. Half of which? Count units, always.
- Borrowing someone else’s units number without their concentration. Their 10 units and your 10 units can be entirely different doses.
