Selank
weak data3 sources
Selank is the gentle option on this shelf, a peptide nasal spray that takes the edge off without sedation or dependence. The effect is subtle, more like a baseline shift than a switch flip. Russian clinical data says it works about as well as a mild benzodiazepine for generalized anxiety, but those are small trials in Russian journals, and the Western evidence base is nearly empty. If you want something low-risk to try alongside bigger changes, selank is reasonable. If you want to actually feel a difference on a hard day, pregabalin or propranolol will get there and selank probably won’t.
What it is
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide built on tuftsin, a fragment of immunoglobulin G that the body already makes. The Russian lab that developed it, the Institute of Molecular Genetics, extended tuftsin’s sequence to make it last longer in the blood and added an anxiolytic effect. The mechanism touches several systems at once: in a radioligand binding study it acted as a positive allosteric modulator at GABA receptors, it slows the breakdown of enkephalins, your endogenous opioid-calming peptides, and in human brain imaging it shifts connectivity in the amygdala. That is a dish and an imaging scan, not a proven pathway in a person, which tracks with the clinical picture: real but modest.
You run it as a nasal spray, usually as the NA-Selank amidate form, which is more stable. It sits in the same Russian anxiolytic-peptide family as semax, but semax is more stimulating and cognitive while selank is more calming. Neither is approved or widely studied outside Russia.
What the research shows
Small Russian clinical trials, no Western replication, and no modern RCT by international standards. That is the whole base:
Realistic protocols
Selank is run intranasally, typically as the NA-Selank amidate. The community dose is 200 to 600 mcg per day, split across two or three sprays. Most people start at the low end and stay there because the effect is subtle enough that chasing higher doses rarely changes the experience. You can run it daily for a few weeks or use it as-needed on days you want a calmer baseline.
Western selank is grey-market powder or a spray of unknown provenance. Require a third-party COA before you order anything; without one you do not know what is in the vial.
There is no hard cycling requirement. Peptides degrade, so tolerance in the traditional sense is less of a concern than with the GABAergic compounds. If you stop noticing it after a few weeks, take a week off and reassess whether it was doing anything. Honest answer for many people: it wasn’t, and that is fine. It is a low-stakes experiment. Run it in the morning or early afternoon, not before bed, and it pairs fine with propranolol for an event day if you want the physical side covered too.
Side effects
Selank has one of the mildest side-effect profiles on this shelf, which tracks with a subtle compound:
