Glutathione is your body’s most abundant antioxidant, and supplementing it does raise your levels. That much is shown. The catch is that “raising glutathione” is a surrogate, not an outcome, and the strongest practical case for it is in people stressing their liver: heavy drinkers, acetaminophen users, anyone running a hepatotoxic compound. For a healthy person who does not drink much, you are paying for an insurance policy against a fire that may not be burning. Oral is the reasonable route. The injection smells like sulfur, burns going in, and adds pain to a thin argument.
What it is
Glutathione is a tripeptide, three amino acids your body already makes and uses as its primary antioxidant and detoxification workhorse. Every cell produces it, the liver runs on it, and it gets depleted by exactly the things you would guess: alcohol, acetaminophen, oxidative stress, aging. The supplement market sells it oral, IV, and injectable, and the routes matter more than usual here. Oral glutathione was long dismissed as getting destroyed in the gut, but newer trial data shows high-dose oral supplementation does raise blood and tissue levels over months. IV pushes deliver a large bolus directly, which is what clinics sell for detox and skin brightening. The subcutaneous or intramuscular injection is the route the biohacker crowd runs, and it works, but it is genuinely unpleasant: the sulfur smell lingers and the injection site burns.

The oral absorption question is answered, but it took six months to show, and four weeks of the same dose moved nothing. The clinical outcome question is mostly not:
Realistic protocols
Oral is the route that makes sense for most people. The absorption data is there, the safety profile is clean, and you avoid the misery of pinning a sulfur compound. Liposomal formulations improve absorption and are worth the premium if you can find them. Take it on an empty stomach. If liver stress is the actual reason you are here, hard drinking, a hepatotoxic compound, long courses of acetaminophen, that is the use case where glutathione earns its place most clearly. NAC is the cheaper precursor route: it supplies the cysteine your body uses to make its own glutathione, costs a fraction, and has decades of clinical use behind it.
If you are supplementing for skin lightening, the oral combination with cystine has the trial data, not the IV push.
