Gabapentin
most data3 sources
Gabapentin is the milder, more erratic version of pregabalin, and for the recreational anxiolytic use, pregabalin wins outright. Gabapentin’s absorption caps out, so chasing the dose is pointless past a certain point, and the effect ceiling is lower. If you cannot get pregabalin, or you want something gentler with less dependence risk, gabapentin is a reasonable second choice. If you can get pregabalin, get pregabalin.
What it is
Gabapentin hits the same alpha-2-delta calcium-channel subunit as pregabalin. Same target, weaker handshake. The meaningful difference is pharmacokinetic: gabapentin relies on a saturable transporter in the gut, so absorption flattens as the dose climbs. Past about 1800 mg a day, blood levels barely budge no matter how much more you swallow. Pregabalin absorbs the same at any dose. That pharmacokinetic ceiling is why gabapentin feels milder, why people who have tried both prefer pregabalin, and why dose-chasing on gabapentin is a dead end.
For anxiety specifically, the evidence base is smaller than pregabalin’s. The biggest signals are in social phobia and alcohol dependence, where the compound has real trial data. For the broader anxiolytic use, the community treats it as pregabalin’s gentler backup.
What the research shows
Gabapentin’s trial data is mostly in pain and epilepsy, but the anxiety and alcohol numbers are worth seeing. The alcohol-dependence trial is the most on-thesis result anywhere on this shelf: gabapentin is the one compound in this column holding randomized evidence that it actually cuts drinking, 17.0% abstinence at 1800 mg/day against 4.1% on placebo.
Realistic protocols
The same rules as the rest of this family apply. One to two times a week maximum, never daily, never with alcohol or opioids. Gabapentin’s absorption quirk means you cannot take one big dose the way you can with pregabalin. The saturable transporter caps out, so the community staggers doses 30 to 45 minutes apart to work around it.
A typical approach: start with 300 mg, then add 300 mg every 30 to 45 minutes until you feel the effect, up to about 1200 to 1800 mg total. Past 1800 mg the gut stops absorbing meaningfully and you are swallowing capsules for nothing. A small fatty snack between doses helps absorption a little.
The experience is milder than pregabalin: a gentle calm, some sociability, decent sleep. It does not hit the same euphoric note. If that is what you are looking for, pregabalin or the pregabalin-plus-baclofen stack is the move. If you want something lighter or you are cautious about the stronger compound, gabapentin does the job at a lower volume.
Side effects
Gabapentin’s side-effect profile is milder than pregabalin’s at equivalent effect, because the effect is milder:
