The rat data is the most interesting of any bioregulator after epitalon: measurable nerve regeneration and conduction recovery in a severed sciatic nerve model. But a severed rat sciatic nerve is not your brain, and no one has tested cortagen in a human for anything. If cognitive support is the goal, sleep, exercise, and a neurologist for anything real are where the evidence actually lives. Substituting cortagen for Cortexin, the crude brain extract with actual clinical history, has no clinical basis either.

Would I take it?Not yet. Rat nerves are not your brain.

What it is

A synthetic tetrapeptide derived from amino acid analysis of Cortexin, a crude brain-cortex peptide extract that has actual clinical use in Russian neurology. Cortagen is the short-peptide distillation of that extract: four amino acids meant to carry the signal without the complexity. The Khavinson bioregulator program’s theory is that these minimal peptides can reach their target tissue and normalize function, and cortagen’s target is the central nervous system.

In rats, cortagen stimulated nerve fiber regrowth, improved recovery from brain ischemia, and reduced oxidative damage. Among the Khavinson family, only epitalon has more published work behind it.

What the research shows

No human trials. Zero. Everything below is animal or in-vitro work. Read it as “interesting,” not “evidence it works in you.”

Rat neurology and one human-tissue lab study. No clinical trial:

In rats after sciatic nerve transection and suturing, intramuscular cortagen at 10 micrograms per kilogram for 10 days increased regenerating nerve fiber growth rate by 27% and conduction velocity by 40%.Bull Exp Biol Med 2001 · rat sciatic nerve
Cortagen accelerated recovery of disturbed individual behavior in chronically ischemic rats with both high and low resistance to hypoxia.Bull Exp Biol Med 2011 · rat brain ischemia
In leukocytes from people aged 75 to 88 years, short peptides including cortagen activated ribosomal genes and decondensed densely packed chromatin fibrils.Bull Exp Biol Med 2004 · human leukocytes in vitro
Five consecutive daily cortagen injections significantly changed 234 of 15,247 assayed transcript clones in mouse heart tissue, the brain bioregulator’s most concrete number, measured in the wrong organ.Neuroendocrinol Lett 2004 · mouse heart transcriptome
No randomized controlled human trial of cortagen exists for any clinical outcome.as of Aug 2026

Realistic protocols

No published study supports a human dose, route, or schedule for cortagen. The community runs the Khavinson bioregulator course: short subcutaneous runs of 10 to 20 days, sometimes stacked with other organ-specific bioregulators. Some people choose cortagen specifically when Cortexin is unavailable, treating the tetrapeptide as a cleaner stand-in for the crude extract. That substitution has no clinical basis. If you run it, keep the course short and do not assume that rat nerve data means cortagen does anything useful for a healthy human brain.

Side effects

No human safety data exists:

unknownZero human tolerability or adverse-event data. A peptide designed to modulate brain-tissue signaling deserves extra respect for that gap.
anecdotalPeople running bioregulator courses that include cortagen occasionally mention improved focus or clarity, but these are uncontrolled, stacked with other compounds, and impossible to pin on cortagen specifically.
