Sildenafil vs Tadalafil
6 sources
Tadalafil is the default, and I take it daily. A low dose every day keeps you ready around the clock, food does not matter, and the blood flow shows up in the gym too. Sildenafil wins one job: the hardest possible peak for a night you can plan, on an empty stomach. If you want to stop thinking about it, tadalafil. Both are approved, proven, and safe for most men, with one rule shared: never with nitrates.
How they differ
It comes down to the clock. Both block PDE5, the enzyme that ends an erection’s blood-flow signal, so arousal works better; neither creates arousal on its own. Sildenafil rises fast, hits hard, and is done in a few hours, so every dose is a plan: empty stomach, half an hour to an hour ahead, and a window you work inside. Tadalafil lingers for days, so a 5 mg pill each morning means there is no plan at all, and an on-demand dose taken Friday evening still covers Saturday morning.
That shapes daily life more than strength does. Sildenafil is a dinner problem: a heavy meal blunts and delays it, so the pill goes in before the food or the night underdelivers. Tadalafil does not care what you ate. A drink or two is fine on either; a heavy night of drinking works against both, because alcohol blunts erections on its own and adds to the blood-pressure drop. The daily tadalafil crowd also runs it for fuller pumps in the gym, and older men get a urinary benefit from the same 5 mg. Sildenafil does the pump too, but only for the session you time it for.
Pump for pump in the moment, sildenafil is the stronger one, and the pick for someone who wants the sharpest peak or only needs help a few times a month. If vardenafil or avanafil are in your search, both are short-acting like sildenafil; avanafil starts faster and minds food less, and neither is the long one. Tadalafil is.
What the research shows
None of my sources puts the two in one trial; the closest thing is a network meta-analysis that put both against placebo in one model:
Both work, at a level few compounds on this site can match. The receipts back the split in my verdict: sildenafil’s case is the timed, empty-stomach dose, and tadalafil’s is that men stay on it for years.
How people run them
Most people should start on daily tadalafil: 5 mg at the same time every day, with or without food. Levels build over about five days, so judge it after a week, not after the first pill. If you only want it for occasions, tadalafil on demand is 10 to 20 mg a couple of hours ahead, starting at 10. Sildenafil is 50 mg on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before, dropping to 25 if 50 is more than you need and going to 100 only if 50 falls short. On either, the lowest dose that works is the dose.
Switching is simple. Going from daily tadalafil to sildenafil, stop the daily pill and use sildenafil when you need it; the tadalafil fades over a few days. Going from sildenafil to daily tadalafil, start the 5 mg any morning and give it the week.
Some men stack an occasional sildenafil on top of daily tadalafil for a big night. I don’t, and daily tadalafil rarely needs the help. If you do, keep the sildenafil at 25 mg, because the headache, flushing, and blood-pressure drop add up. And the nitrate rule outlasts the pill: no nitroglycerin, isosorbide, or poppers within a day of sildenafil or two days of tadalafil.
Side effects, side by side
Same family of sides on both; sildenafil’s arrive sharper and leave sooner, tadalafil’s are milder and stick around:
